This club belonged to my grandpa and was mounted on a display in his office for as long as I can remember. It is a classic Scottish made club with a crown stamp, forged by a maker like Robert Forgan & Sons. The club was in good condition but needed a re-oil, a little cleaning on the shaft, an adjustment on the grip, and new whipping.
I started with a quick scrub on the club head with mineral oil and 0000 steel wool. There was no rust so it was a quick clean just to shine and seal it again. The natural dark patina is beautiful. I did a very light sand on the shaft and put one very light fresh coat of Tru-Oil on it just to seal it again. The top of the grip was loose so I removed the tacks and then tightened and re-tacked it. If it was going to be played I would want to put some fresh underlisting beneath but since it is just for display I left the grip as original as possible.
For the whips I went with a classic tuxedo look, black whips with white bands in the center. I did two near the hosel, did a double band on the bottom of the grip and a single band at the top. My last step was a quick buff over the entire club with some Skidmore’s restoration cream to coat the entire club in a nice barrier for many more years.

This one is now up in my home office, although it does occasionally come down and get swung on the course.
